[TRIGGER WARNING FOR RAPE, RAPE CULTURE]
Boys are told from a young age that whatever they do will be excused under the “boys will be boys” mantra, and that “boys will be boys” mentality leads to what I call the “boiling frog” problem of women’s sexual boundaries. I call it that because if you put a frog into a pot of boiling water, it will jump right out, but if you put a frog into a pot of room-temperature water and slowly heat it to a boil, the frog will acclimate as it heats and never jump out, eventually boiling to death. Similarly, when we learn as young girls to tolerate “low-level” boundary violations like the ones we often are forced to suffer in silence at school, at home and on the street – bra-snapping, boob-grabbing, ass pinching, catcalling, dick flashing “all in good fun” relentless violations that adults and authorities routinely ignore – it makes it harder for us to notice when even greater boundaries are being violated, eventually leading to the reality that many women who are raped just freeze and fall silent, because that’s what they’ve been taught to do over and over since day one. You tell me what’s more infantilizing: repeatedly letting boys (and grown men) off the hook for their behavior because “boys will be boys” and we can’t ever expect any differently, or creating a consent standard in which all partners take active responsibility for their partner’s safety, and which acknowledges the truly diseased sexual culture we’re soaking in every day. -

40 Hours Community Service for Killing a 17-Year-Old Girl?
Seventeen, happily engaged, and pregnant, Maria Isabel Vasquez Jimenez’s life was just beginning when she collapsed under the brutal California sun. Forced to work nine hours without water or rest in the shade, her body gave up and she fell into her finance’s arms. Even then, her employer, Merced Farm Labor, showed more concern for covering themselves than for her safety: the workers who took her to a local clinic were told to claim that Maria had passed out while exercising. Though clinic staff rushed her to the hospital upon seeing the dangerous state she was in, it was too late: she died of a 108 degree fever. The adequate punishment for those who caused her death? Forty hours community service, apparently.
That’s the sentence San Joaquin County District Attorney James P. Willett is considering in a plea deal for Merced owner Maria De Los Angeles Colunga, who was charged with involuntary manslaughter. Safety coordinator Elias Armenta, also charged, faces 400 hours community service and a $1000 fine — still nothing in comparison to snatching away a young life. But Maria’s family and other supporters aren’t willing to let the California justice system act like her life didn’t matter. At a press conference organized by United Farm Workers (UFW), where Maria’s fiance and the uncle she lived with appeared, they made it clear that nothing short of jail time will provide justice in the beloved teenage girl’s case and send a message that the lives of farm workers are not disposable.
[…]The oppression of migrants is so severe that we feel comfortable working them to death, then deporting their families. I shudder at how dehumanized these people (not ‘illegals’- people) are.
Horrifying. This is the consequence of using labels such as “illegals”. It strips them of the humanity required to hand out a true and just punishment.
I hate that term

Geek Girl Smash!: Fat Etiquette
This seems to be an issue that people don’t quite understand. Here’s a quick primer on how to deal with the fat people in your life.
General Etiquette That Can Be Applied to Everyone
1. Do not make backhanded compliments. “You have such a pretty face, but…” is not an acceptable way to comment…
